Healer builds have become essential for teams since the Heart of Thorns expansion pack for Guild Wars 2 added Raid Missions. Back then, the game didn't really require a healer for PvE, but it evolved to include more difficult end-game content, and even if they were present in PvP and World vs. World, they weren't as noticeable as they are now.

Mesmer feels so smooth to play. It feels unlike any other mmo class. I wish it had a viable healer build, but that’s just because the class is so fun to play. Good option for group content or open world. Oh fantastic I’ll look into that. In that case I revise my claim: Mesmer is the perfect class.
For fractal builds, the "strongest" classes at the top level are Guardian (Firebrand), Ranger (Soulbeast), Elementalist (Weaver), Warrior (Berserker) and Revenant (Renegade). They all play very different roles and bring different things to the table and have different playstyles so it's all subjective.
PvE Elite Spec Tier List - post patch. Impressive list of capable specs. Quality tier list. A good contribution to the guild wars 2 community. It looks like there are some reasonable options if you aren't playing warrior and ele (to a certain extent). They really need to sort out the power builds, though.
